Upgrade of the Diagnostic Imaging Suite and replacement CT Simulator

The upgrade of the Diagnostic Imaging Department in St Luke's has taken place and involved the replacement of x-ray and ultrasound equipment together with integrating the RIS (Radiology Information System) PACS (Picture Archiving and Communications System) system. Associated structural refurbishment of the department also took place.

The oldest conventional simulator (Elekta) in the Hospital was replaced with a second large bore CT simulator and associated virtual simulation workstations.

The imaging examinations play a large part in planning of patient treatment and are also used to assess the treatment response and to monitor the progress of the patient.

All funds for this project were raised by The Friends of St Luke’s Hospital.

EXPANDING TO MEET YOUR NEEDS – New & Replacement Linear Accelerators 2009

St Luke’s Hospital, the largest radiotherapy centre in Ireland, has installed two additional and replaced two Linear Accelerators (Linacs), increasing Linac capacity by one-third.

Image guided radiation means that the Linear Accelerator that gives the radiation has a sophisticated machine attached to it that can take a 3 dimensional picture of the part of the patient being treated before the radiation beam is switched on each day. This presents the opportunity to increase the benefit of the treatment to the patient.

The new and replacement Linacs will provide speedier access and more advanced treatments for our patients. 700 additional patients will receive treatment each year. The new units will provide the most advanced treatment techniques and reflects St Luke’s commitment that the needs of our patients and their families continue to be the focus of our service.
